Tallinn was founded in 1248, but the earliest human settlements date back 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest capital cities of Northern Europe. The initial claim over the land was laid by the Danes in 1219 after a successful raid of Lyndanisse led by Valdemar II of Denmark, followed by a period of alternating Scandinavian and German rule. Due to its strategic location, the city became a major trade hub, especially from the 14th to the 16th century, when it grew in importance as part of the Hanseatic League. Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tallinn is the major political, financial, cultural and educational center of Estonia. Often dubbed the Silicon Valley of Europe, it has the highest number of ...

Unfortunately, our short visit in Helsinki is over. We have reached the farthest point from home and now move back in the direction of our home again. Next destination is the capital of Estonia, Tallinn. We take the ferry M/S Star of the ferry ship shipping company Tallink. The ferry needs approximately 2.5 hours for the approx. 80 km. It is a beautiful morning when we arrive at the terminal in the west harbor of Helsinki. The ferry lies ready to go at the pier. The cruise ship Costa Pacifica lies at anchor on the opposite side. With a capacity of more 3700 passengers, it belongs already to the greater ones. We watch the trucks and cars for a while before they disappear in the hull of our ship. After the harbor, we pass the island of Pihlajasaari with its beaches; one says the most beaut...
