  • Norwegian Star Cruise Ship arrives in Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn was founded in 1248, but the earliest human settlements date back 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest capital cities of Northern Europe. The initial claim over the land was laid by the Danes in 1219 after a successful raid of Lyndanisse led by Valdemar II of Denmark, followed by a period of alternating Scandinavian and German rule. Due to its strategic location, the city became a major trade hub, especially from the 14th to the 16th century, when it grew in importance as part of the Hanseatic League. Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The four-legged passengers made themselves look beautiful. As long as we only see water around, we use the time to eat a snack. Every now and then a ferry approaches us in a reversed direction. Then the silhouette of Tallin appears on the horizon. Next door to the modern skyscrapers, we recognize the medieval church steeples and the hill with the Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral with its typical onion towers. After laying out the ship we take a cab and let us drive to our hotel. You can reach the old town in approx. 15 min on foot. But we didn't want to walk with all our luggage. ....... please read more: https://blog.myvideomedia.com Leider ist unser kurzer Aufenthalt in Helsinki vorüber.

The 150 metre long Estonia left the Estonian capital Tallin and sailed into a raging Baltic Sea. Unlike the other car ferries on the route, the Estonia ran at full speed into waves more than 15 meters tall. Six hours into the voyage, she sank to a depth of more than 75 metres. The first sign of danger was the sound of metal scraping against metal. The sound was caused by the weakly constructed locks on the bow visor breaking under the strain of the waves. The visor eventually broke off of the ship, uncovering the opening to the car deck behind. Water rushed in and destabilised the ship, starting a catastrophic chain of events that brought the ship down. Without warning, the vessel lurched some 20 degrees to starboard, and would continue to tilt to 90 degrees. Passengers were in danger of getting crushed under falling equipment. At such an angle, it was all but impossible to move around. Those who were going to survive had already reached the deck. Tragically, by then most of the lifeboats could not be released due to sideways tilt of the ship. Soon, the ferry slipped beneath the waves into a watery grave. The Estonia disaster occurred on Wednesday, 28 September 1994, between about 00:55 to 01:50.
